What is an IRS Tax Audit?
An IRS tax audit is a review/ examination of an individual’s or organization’s accounts and financial information compared to what they claimed on their tax return.  The process is meant to ensure that all taxpayers are filing correctly, accurately and according to the tax law, each year.

IRS will notify you by mail and sometimes telephone if your account is selected for an audit.  It is important to note that they will not send email correspondence, nor ask for sensitive data over the phone.

There are generally four types of Audits:
  • Correspondence IRS audit
  • IRS Field audit
  • Notice of office audit
  • National Research Program (NRP)

Audit Selections
If you are selected for an Audit it does not always suggest that an error has been made.  Returns are selected by the following methods:
  • Random selection and computer screening-statistical formula
  • Document matching-when payer records doesn’t match the information reported to the IRS, i.e. W-2’s or Form 1099s.
  • Related examinations- returns may be selected for audit when they involve issues or transactions with other taxpayers, such as business partners or investors, whose returns were selected for audit.

Clients also benefit from our depth of expertise working with accounting and tax regulations. We often supplement our services with recommendations for ways to mitigate future compliance risks.
